It may be that you have hard links to files that used to be in the same
file system, and now are on a different file system. If you only moved
/ and there are other mounts that are still on the old drive, you would
have to fix up the hard links, maybe by making them symbolic links.
Just a guess.
the new / (hdc1) had been installed and running already as /backup and
had been chown'd to clover:root and chmod'd to 700.
SO, . & .. on / were clover:root 700
