newbie can't execute binary file

I get an error can't execute binary file when trying to execute some files I download from Internet, for example, the realplayer installer rp8_linux_sparc_cs1.bin. The same problem came up with the staroffice installer. permissions and ownerships seem okay. Anybody know what's going on? Running
