I'm having a closer look at redhat-config-packages to see if it may be used instead of a custom PERL script to keep our systems up to date. Some questions I've come up with:

1. What is a directory for the --tree argument supposed to look like? I tried one where I had copied the contents of all installation CDs, but it didn't work.
2. Is there any way the RPMs be collected from several locations. I like to have one directory containing the OS dist, one with official updates, another with various additions and bugfixes etc., and have the install tool pick the latest version of each RPM among these.
3. How is information on collections obtained? Can't be from comps.xml of distro, since it isn't necessarily available on startup time.
4. Is updates of already installed collections supported, anyway? (When the dist tree contains newer RPMs than the ones already installed.)

There is probably more, but I can't think of what it is right now...
