Depends on the modem. Some work. Some don't. Go to the linmodem web
site and find your specific modem to see if your's works or not.

Can't confirm that, but there seem to be plenty of people on this list who
have managed to get their software modems to work under Linux.
No personal experience though. I need a softmodem in my PC as much as I need

A modem was not found or a driver for the modem was not loaded?
Most likely a winmodem.
Check the chipset of the on-board modem and then go to linmodems on the net
to find a driver.
