Thanks to an almighty thunderstorm last night my system rebooted itself.
We so rarely have power failures that I didn't even consider shutting down
when the storm started and the power loss happened later in the night,
probably when the Electricity supplier was getting things working again
for those in the area who had lost power.

Nothing worked in my RH installation when I tried to login this morning
and fsck seemed unable to repair the damaged file system so I had to
re-install. Probably made a mistake in allowing a re-format of the hard
disk but wasn't sure what damage had been done.

Spent most of the morning getting everything back to the something like
the previous state, of course I had no backups of my user configurationss
:-(. but I did still have copies of things like the libc files needed for StarOffice
:in an OS/2 /download directory.

I installed only those packages I though would be needed for a standalone
system, nothing that looked like networking and selected only what I
thought to be the essential daemons to load at startup.

When I run xisp it connects OK but won't stay connected long enough (less
thank 30 seconds) for me to configure NS.

I have not yet modified any of the files in /etc like resolv.conf or hosts
hoping that installing xisp would sort all that out. I altered so many
things in the previous installation trying to get ppp working as set out
in the Howto's and ended up with 'mail' directories and modified files all
over the place. I am hoping to get a cleaner installation this time. Only
running things like NS as 'user' for example.

For the time being NS will handle my email requirements, I don't use
'news'. I only connect to my isp a couple of times a day.

1. What files must I edit to get this connection working properly?

2. Have I missed installing something essential in my attempt to install
only what is needed for a standalone system?

One final point - I have never been quite sure what file to edit to change
the default 'localhost' to something more interesting. When I was not
linking up to the outside world in didn't matter too much how I got rid of
that default setting and substituted my own.
