Hi,
I went through the same problems for several months. I do not like the
communicator messaging program, and really needed more of a gui interface
with the volume of mail i receive than pine could offer. Have you
considered installing KDE as your window manager? It has a nice mail
program called KMail that comes with it. More info is on their website:

Be warned that this software is in beta testing so its still kinda buggy.
I'd recommend the beta3 version for now...beta4 is still extremely unstable.
