If the "extra wire" is from the 15 pin male DB connector, that would
be the Ign lead. The Ign lead goes to the battery or power supply.
Make sure it has a 1 amp fuse in it, anything higher could burn your
Spectra up. I have seen this many times, not pretty, and they smell BAD.

for 440, and have a riblless cable with an extra wire sticking out of
one connector (what's it for?)
