Greetings,
I have six new installs of 2.5.3 using deb packages on ubuntu 12.04
and can't get /etc/init.d or service commands to start up rivendell or shut
it down. I have to manually kill caed, ripcd, and rdcatch to shut it down.
anyone had this situation on debian based systems?

I've just made a quick check. The quantal Rivendell 2.5.3 pack
r they could be
somewhere else on your system.
I know there are ways to start up and stop these daemons without the
init.d script, however I still prefer the tried and true method that I'm
familiar with.

Under Ubuntu 12.04 I've been using some upstart jobs, one per daemon and
another that prepares the environment and start the sequence.

The rivendell service script checks a variable to determine if it should
actually do anything. Edit /etc/defaults/rivendell and uncomment this
line: #RUN_MODE=init.d
