Peace Corps is a United States Government agency officially established in 1961. Its purpose is to deploy American Volunters to interested countries in order for them to provide technical assistance and initiate cross-cultural exchange. As per the United States and Romanian Government Country Agreement, the agency has been running operations in Romania since 1992. Presently, there are 65 Volunteers teaching English in middle and high schools, working under the Teaching English as a Foreign Language program. The program runs under the Ministry of Education, Research and Innovation supervision, as per the Project Plan drafted by Peace Corps Romania, following Peace Corps guidelines. The program comprises Volunteers teaching English for a 2-year period of time, and their service as English teachers is based on applications Peace Corps Romania receives from schools. Effective immediately, Peace Corps Romania is open to receiving applications from interested schools in Romania. Deadline for submissions is February 1st, 2010. Since 1992, American Volunteers have been teaching English in middle and high school throughout Romania, meeting local needs. Peace Corps Romania receives applications from rural and small town schools, where no Volunteer has been assigned before, schools in underserved areas that lack access to English education and human resources. The American Volunteer and the Romanian Counterpart split the class in groups so that the Volunteer's teaching does not replace the Romanian's, but rather to complement what the Romanian teacher teaches in class.
