We'll take the approach of treating Windows+Cygwin simply as a really brain
damaged flavor of unix.

matt, can you debug this, and check wether xbstr gets that fancy length out
of the hash, or if its some trouble with that sequence
-> putting the xbstr call above that call should fix that problem then
if not, feeding the hash has some troubles.
trees are squeeky clean, no extra cflags etc. Still getting it.
