Ok, well, if this cannot be made to work reliably and immediately, then
these changes should be rolled back.
It "hung" because citadel server crashed! - at least according to the
messages in my Aide room.
No core was generated (although I had cores generated on crashes a few weeks
ago and I did nothing to turn them off); so I turned core dumps on again and
I'll get some backtraces I hope.

implement this the preferred way (using a 'starttls' stanza in the
protocol). I haven't been able to figure out why it does that, which is
why I never finished that function.
