this may be peculiar to the version of g++ (4.2.4) or an artifact of my
config, but just in case it is useful here is the build error I now get with
the command line that dpkg-buildpackage had executed:
g++ -c -g -O2 -DNDEBUG -DBUILD_RELEASE -DNO_TIMING -g0 -O2 -Wall
-DHAVE_LIRC -DHAVE_LIBJACK -D
