The thing that's confusing me right now is that I'm sure that when the GUI 
came up before with no MIDI outputs enabled that the MIDI devices would have 
<no device> labels or similar.  Now we have a default studio with 4 
unconnected MIDI devices (two externals and two software devices) on and my 
first instinct is to wonder why no sound is coming out when I use them.

Please tell me it wasn't always like this?  I know this new behaviour has been 
in place for a while and undoubtedly explained in full and has a good reason 
but it's really quite annoying.  Just a simple label changed if no 
connections are available would be enough to fix it.
