I'm running a simulator and feeding some statistics from it to rrdtool
using the RRDs perl module. In Gipple.rrd, in_use is of type gauge. Step
is 1 second, heartbeat is something quite long (like 15 minutes). I
issued the following sequence of updates:
Gipple.rrd --template in_use 1135116433:1

I have been playing with rrdtool for a week now. I went threw the
tutorial and the overview. I understand how it works and what it can do
for me. I currently have a working and in production MRTG installation
(that I use to get SNMP information).
I have followed the HowTo on the mrtg
I got it. I just echo'd that value to awk like this:
echo 1.10e+01 | awk '{printf "%4.2f", $1}'

I've been using rrdtool for awhile now through apps like MRTG, Cacti,
Nagiosgraph, and the like. I have a situation right now where my company
has an IBM p570 that we are trying to plot some data points as to see how
much of the 570 is really being allocated to LPARs and actually being
