I found the problem, or at least a workaround. I was specifying a source
directory like this: /home/ with a trailing slash. This led to the
recursive backup directory structure that I indicated earlier. If I leave

I must be missing something obvious. Can somebody help me out. If I run
rsync with the delete option and the backup-dir option, I get a nice saved
copy of all files that were deleted. This makes for a nace 'undelete'
