Right. I've got it working now and it would appear that the problem was
that I'd not set some global parameters.
Here's what I added to the top of my conf file:
the next time I looked at the site, the top ad was much more obviously an ad.
That one that happened to come up when I wrote the prior message just blended so
well with the rest of the site that it wasn't clear that it was an ad (black
text on a white background, no logo...)

Just a quick note: the number of ads on the site has been greatly reduced
now. We hope that will make things immediately more usable. Redesign is
underway, we will probably ask for more feedback next week.
