Witt doesn't question the athletic director's abilities.

"I have looked over it very, very carefully," Witt said. "It's an issue I've given thought to. And as I said, I consider the university very fortunate to have a man like Mal Moore as its AD."

At the same time, he got a firsthand dose of the pressures faced by Moore when Witt fired Price and accompanied the athletic director on a coaching search that landed Shula on May 8.

"I understand the concept of accountability," Witt said. "If we don't have a successful football program over the foreseeable future -- once we get beyond these next two or three years -- my decision will probably be second-guessed. There will be people who would argue you shouldn't have made the decision you did. That comes with the territory. All you can do is carefully study a situation and make the best decision you can possibly make. Then you live with the consequences."

As many fans try to usher Moore into retirement, their choice for replacement is Newsome, an All-American at Alabama under Bryant, an All-Pro tight end with the Cleveland Browns and one of the most highly regarded general managers in the National Football League.

"I have a very good job," Newsome said when asked if he would consider replacing Moore down the road. "But, at some point, would I consider going back to the University of Alabama? Yes."

Newsome said the fact that he makes a higher salary now than he would as Alabama's athletic director "is not a factor."
