nbc13.com Former Bama Kicker Watches His Historic House Burn POSTED: 2:09 pm CDT August 4, 2005
FLORENCE, Ala. -- A century-old two-story house owned by one of Alabama's former star football players sustained heavy damage during a fire in the city's historic district. Van Tiffin became a part of Crimson Tide folklore when his last-second, 52-yard field goal defeated rival Auburn in 1985. He stood helplessly yesterday afternoon as he watched firefighters put out the fire. Tiffin said he and his wife bought the home several months ago and had been renovating it. The blaze was reported to shortly before noon and according to firefighters the home is salvageable. An investigator said the fire apparently started as roofers were welding the portion of the roof that covers the porch to the roof's sloped portion. No one was in the house when the fire started. One firefighter was treated for apparent heat exhaustion and smoke inhalation Copyright 2005 by The Associated Press. All rights reserved.
