Players picking up new offense quickly

08/18/03
TUSCALOOSA — Alabama offensive coordinator Dave Rader said it can be a bit
overwhelming to watch the calendar turn quickly toward the Tide's Aug. 30 season
opener against South Florida.

"You look at the calendar and you start saying we need to accomplish this, this and
this," Rader said. "Then you see game week is coming up pretty soon. You say, 'Man, I
don't know, maybe we can't accomplish all that.' We have a great number of things we
need to complete."

However, on days like Saturday when the Alabama offense scored 10 touchdowns in a
117-play scrimmage, the thoughts turn more positive.

"What's really encouraging is that I really think that in these 12 days — or
whatever it is — we've had together, our guys are believing in this offense and
believing in one another," Rader said.

- Alabama took it relatively easy Sunday as head coach Mike Shula directed his team
through a short walk-through practice and also spent some time in meetings. The Tide
will finish the two-a-day practice sessions today and hold a practice at Bryant-Denny
Stadium on Tuesday. Classes begin Wednesday.... <snip>
