TUSCALOOSA - Adding linebackers is a priority for University of Alabama
football coaches, and Crimson Tide fans will get to see
their latest recruit on national television this month.

Charlie Kirschman, a senior at Nease High School in St. Augustine, Fla., told
Alabama coach Mike Shula on Monday he intends to play
for the Crimson Tide next season, marking the ninth commitment for Alabama's
2006 signing class.

On Aug. 27, Nease will play at Hoover High School in an 11 a.m. season opener
to be televised nationally by ESPN.

Kirschman, a 6-foot-3, 225-pound senior, received offers from several other
schools, including Nebraska, Purdue and Iowa. He is a
teammate of Tim Tebow, considered the top senior quarterback in the nation, and
a former teammate of Crimson Tide wide receiver Will
Oakley, who is a redshirt freshman.

Alabama has two preseason All-Southeastern Conference linebackers in DeMeco
Ryans and Freddie Roach, both seniors. The other
starter, Juwan Simpson, is a junior, and the backups are inexperienced.

Alabama already had one linebacker commitment for 2006 in Mountain Brook's
Charlie Higgenbotham, and it signed four this year: Baron
Huber, Zach Schreiber, Prince Hall and Eryk Anders. Anders is a 6-3, 223-pound
recent signee from San Antonio, Texas, who is
expected to report next week.

Alabama's players report next Monday and begin practice Tuesday afternoon.
