Dear Sage Developers,

I'm curious about the testing and installation support for the optional
packages listed on the SageMath documentation page here
<https://doc.sagemath.org/html/en/reference/spkg/#optional-packages>.

I was wondering if anybody knows more about the extent of testing done for
these packages. The documentation does not specify (as far as I can tell),
and I'm interested in understanding whether these packages undergo regular
testing or if they are primarily community-maintained. Such information
would be incredibly helpful for users like myself who manage compute
resources and strive to offer a robust environment to our users.

In the past, when I was involved in Sage development, I recall that some
contributors would regularly build and test all optional packages with each
new release, providing feedback on any issues. This community effort was
invaluable and ensured a higher degree of reliability. From my recent
experience with a clean Ubuntu 24.04 install, approximately 30% of the
optional packages encountered build issues, while the rest installed
successfully. I'm trying to discern if this is an expected outcome due to
limited testing, or if there might be some adjustments I could make to
improve the installation success rate.

It might be beneficial for the community if the status of testing for these
packages was more transparently communicated on the documentation page.
Such clarity could encourage more community members to contribute to the
testing and maintenance of these packages.

Thank you for your time and all the work you put into SageMath.

Best regards,

William http://wstein.org
