The MPIR project is pleased to announce their first release 0.9.0.

MPIR is based on the GMP project (specifically version 4.2.1 of GMP,
which was licensed LGPL v2+).

The main MPIR website is here:

http://www.mpir.org/

A source tarball is available here:

http://www.mpir.org/mpir-0.9.0.tar.gz

The main things we have been concentrating on for this release are
improving build support for Apple and Sun systems (a project which
will be ongoing), provision of a port to Microsoft MSVC and
incorporation of Jason Martin's Core 2 patches, Pierrick Gaudry's AMD
64 patches and Niels Mohler's GCD patches. A full list of important
changes can be found here:

http://www.mpir.org/changes.html

A continuously expanding list of planned projects is available here:

http://www.mpir.org/projects.html

We already have funding and promises of funding for some of these, and
we hope that many new developers will join the project as volunteers
in the coming months. Please ask on our development list:

http://groups.google.com/group/mpir-devel/topics?start=

if interested in contributing.

We intend to have a very regular release schedule (at least every 3 months).

Sage 3.3 will already use MPIR 0.9.0 (we have done extensive testing).

Please feel free to post this announcement on other lists where you
think developers might be interested to hear about the MPIR release.

Bill.
