FWIW, on Debian testing running on Core i7 + 16 GB RAM, 8.1.beta9 + #24026
+ #23990 + #23923 + their dependencies led me to the same problem as Eric ;
merging #24088 gave me a Sage that passes ptestlong without error
whatsoever.

pull of #24088 branch, make ptestlong resulted in a single doctest failure:
