Sage-6.9 doesn't support OSX 10.10, you need something more recent. Ideally
get the sage-7.2.beta0 binary that fixes some packaging bug.

It is most probably a half-broken binary - it was not built to run on the
hardware you have.
Do you have a reason not to use the latest Sage version?

3) Use finder to visit the sage folder you just copied it and double click
on the "sage" icon.

Sorry, I do not quite understand what you wrote.
I copied the "SageMath" folder to one of my directories.
Then, I dragged the "sage" file to terminal and ran it.
I thought by this, I completed the step

It should look like this. In your more recent message (with a good version
of Sage), though, you had:
