Saligao: Local residents on Wednesday found that a dump outside the solid waste management plant on the Saligao plateau was largely responsible for the stench spreading to the village below over the past few weeks. The issue of foul odour had been recently debated at a gram sabha, following which sarpanch Lafira Gomes had assured to arrange a visit to the plant. Dean D’Cruz, a villager and director of the voluntary organisation, Goa Foundation, had also submitted written complaints in the matter to the authorities. The delegation of villagers and panch members on Wednesday questioned the general manager of Hindustan Waste Treatment Private Ltd, Ganesh Kandaswamy, about the plant’s operations. Upon inspecting its various units, they found workers struggling to segregate a host of filthy recyclable material. They also observed that the baling machine generated large bundles of plastic and paper that reeked. “The quality of compost produced was found to have little nutritional value and mainly consisted of dry fibres and inorganic particles,” a member of the delegation said. The group found that biogas production unit alone seemed to be functioning well. However, what appeared to be contributing to the stench downhill the most was a mound of garbage transported from Aradi, Candolim. “Smells are emanating from the plant, but the dump outside it is only worsening the situation,” Mario Cordeiro, a villager, said.
