Dears,

The very first book that Daniel F. D'Souza [Mumbai-born Saligoakar
resident of Vasco] published in his Mother Tongue Konkani, Koslich
Malis Nastana [Without any Malice] won him the second Konknni Martir
Florian Vaz Puroskar AND the Konkani Bhasha Mandal's Sahitiya
Puroskar, both in 2008. Daniel F. D'Souza does not have any formal
education in Konkani but he writes as much flair  as he does in
English. He also speaks both the languages fluently.

His next  book was "Chun'nam ani Kan'ddam" [Zizyphus rugosa and
Carissa carandas] named after two thorny plants  with wild but sweet
edible berries on the hillsides of Goa during summer.

Now in the land where the Brazilian Cashew nut [Anacardium
occidentale] has naturalized itself so much that Goa has an
international "Geographical Indication" for Cashew Feni, he has
published yet another collection of selected essays under the title
Goddkam [sprouted cashenuts, also called as 'goddavlim"]. Cashew nut
shells have a phenolic oil which is very corrosive and hence no one
would eat cashew nuts ...till a famine made some Konkann coastal
person to eat Goddkam in sheer desperation somewhere in the early
1920. He did not die. Now cahewnuts and feni are the only exportable
agricultural produce of Goa!!

Goddkam is priced at just Rs.50/- a copy, thanks to the Dalgado
Konknni Akademi's support for its publication. Buy and read a copy.
You get to read 25 essays and still have a book that you can share
with your children and grandchildren.

Mog asundi
Miguel
