Andy,
I don't think that count files is going to work, I think Dirk is right about
setting up the regular smtp check that is built into SA...though there is
another external check that comes with SA called "SMTP2POP3" that will make
sure that the SMTP service is not only running, but actually work

Personally, I set several levels of alert, depending upon whom I want to be
alerted and when...but it can get very confusing if you try to set too many
alerts depending upon dependency...thought I guess what you are suggesting
would work.
However, for dependent devices, I do it a bit differently..
The alert would first check if the "normal" WHEN gives an GO (send alert),
then IF the status is down THEN the extra condition would be checked.
Can you give me some examples (off-list) of when the %e is null (empty)?

Actually, Dirk, I have had a number of times when the value returned to
%E is null (unable to check), but that is a temporary situation--- not a DOWN
condition . If I had the means to check for that value, I wouldn't
send a "false" alert.

However you look at it, the alert was correct. The service was down and so
the alert was send.
If you set the alert to be send on 2 downs, then you will have a longer down
period before getting the alert.

Jesse,
I guess adding another ping within the services checks might be helpful.
I would be kinda "gun-shy" adding a lot of checks for a "once a year
occurrence". Determine whether the additional checking would be
valuable, or just more maintenance.

If you are not importing a 3.x host file into a 4.x system you need to just
copy the file to your directory and reference that file in the startup
parameters. (File-->Setup-->General-->Startup)
