You could use a batch file or shell script and count files recursively setting the exit code to the number of files. Then use the external error level check. This is how I monitor the health of our mail queue. Actually I might have had to write the number to a file and then get that number. Either way wanted to give you an idea of an alternative. Is it a linux based mail server or Windows?
