Alright so I download strace and compiled it :). The output from it however is of little help to me. It shows that configure is looking for ldap.h but does not seem to say where configure is looking. I have added the OpenLDAP lib folder to my ld.so.conf file and ran ldconfig and that did

I am replying to myself because I solved this. The problem was the netgroup directive in the nsswitch.conf. It was ldap [NOTFOUND=return] files. I changed it to files ldap and everything is happy. I have no idea what that entry is even about. This is just a word to the wise. Misty On
