This occurs whether I use sernet 3.3.7 rpms or build my own from
samba.org3.3.7 tgz.
I increased logging and here is what I get in log.winbindd-idmap.

As far as I understood clean_star=1 is absolutely ok for GFS/GFS2?
CTDB is not going to work without Red Hat Cluster manage. CMAN starts
dlm_controld and gfs_controld. ccsd handles node-to-node communication. I
think GPFS has the similar manager like CMAN.
I took your comment to mean
change this:
idmap backend = ldap:ldap://x.x.x; ldap:ldap://y.x.x;
to this:
