I've found a solution which is to just chmod o-rwx the dictory so the
testuser doesn't have permission to open any files. That way it
can't open them with O_CREAT by mistake.

Just to give a quick/partial answer on thi*s o*ne. I downgraded my server to
opensuse 11.3 and samba 3.5.4 and it worked. Just to check that I hadn't
done anything wrong in the samba set-up I copied smb.conf to the 11.4
install and it did not work. I assume that something has changed/gone
