no, I used cifs instead of smbfs in fstab, see man mount.cifs. But I'd guess
that there are others on this list that know more about this, or not???

I had the same errors with the 2.6.9 kermeö on a Debian Sarge system. I read
somewhere that one should use cifs, which seems to work for me. I haven't
had time to fully verify it though.
