I have the same issue. Only started happening when I upgraded to 3.0.25b
Centos5
As a temporary solution I set force security mode = 0770 on the shares
which fixes the problem but is not an ideal solution.

Yes I have both server string and netbios name configured but I still
get the version number in the share name.

When mapping a drive to the samba server the share name that appears in
Windows XP for instance is:
Shares on 'Samba 3.0.23c-2.el5.2.0.2 (fs1)' (T:)
Anyway to remove the 'Samba and version number from the name of the
share so it's just plain: Shares on 'fs1 (fs1)' (T:)

netbios aliases = in your smb.conf
Then setup the cname in DNS and point it to the correct A record.
