Our network is segmented into 4 vlans, which broadcast packets are
inter-vlan routed via a router.
Without using WINS server, windows client (namely 2000/xp) cannot locate
PDC. I had to set each PC WINS server to the samba PDC IP address.

I was un-successful using pdb_mysql in < samba 3.0.20.
some bugs were found on pdb_mysql module in version prior to 3.0.20.
you should really use version 3.0.20 or above.
in samba 3.0.20b smb.conf,
you should not even mention column name. samba use only default column.

I have very similar problem with samba 3.0.20b running on Redhat 9.
in my case, smb process stacks up (within reasonable amount) and freeze.
I had to restart smb to make it works again.
the machine i'm using for samba pdc is quite low end (256 mb memory).
