for the storage of usernames and passwords.
I have always used smbldap-tools for this. It works pretty well.
They have a pretty comprehensive howto as well.

and a remote, NFS mounted filesystem, when I attempt
to remount, I don't see any duplicates.
But what does /proc/mounts say? It may well be different of what the mount
command says, since mount reads /etc/mtab.

with smb:// .
smbmount is obsolete. Have you tried mounting with the cifs filesystem type
instead? Is it any better?

elapses between your asking the media player to play the file and the media
player starting to play that file?
