Can someone clarify this for me? The docs are not clear. It seems that an
election is held when:
* There is no LMB or the current LMB shuts down.
* A machine joins the network with "preferred master = yes" and forces an
election.
Any other times when an election is held?
What's also not clear
So let me get this straight? When you access the fileshare from a client
computer, you don't see all the files?
Does the user you log in as and the user that gets mapped to the share have
permissions to view all files? Could be a permissions problem. Who owns the

The docs aren't clear, so don't think that I'm being lazy and want a quick
answer. (I'm reading Ch 10 of the how-to)
On the one hand it says, "where there is no WINS server, all name registrations
+ name lookups are done by UPD broadcast." So then I don't need a WINS server.
But then it says, "
OK guys what's the minimum (in a simple home network -- no subnets, mixed
windows/linux boxes) to get browsing to work *with no issues*?
I've been reading the official samba how-to, specially chapter 10 and 29.
However, it's not really clear. I went on the irc channel and did not find a

@Doug@ - So going w/o a WINS server works even if I use different workgroups?
Sweet...

Hi. All, I've been reading the docs but I'm not too sure when I should run a
WINS server.
Just to confirm, I only need a WINS server if I have more than one workgroup?
or more than one subnet?
Otherwise the DNS server should be sufficient, right? (My router uses static
