I could do that with Red Hat 7.2 Using smb://netbios name/folder. However,
it was apparently removed from Red Hat 8.0. So, it depends on version of
Linux.

Sounds like a common problem --- What is your firewall settings? Try
dropping the firewall or stopping IPCHAINS and IPTABLES.

I've never used mkscript to add samba users. I'v always used the smbpasswd
command.
smbpasswd -a
Also, you need to make sure the use is a valid user for the Linux machine
before adding to Samba.

I'm not an expert but I see lots of things missing in your smb.conf file.
You have not defined the samba server netbios name. No samba password path.
Have you set samba passwords? Define security level.
Also, you may find that you will neeed to stop IPChains and IPTables on the
samba server once
I'm running Red Hat version 7.2 as server. It has been fully upgraded from
Red Hat UP2DATE.
Samba 2.2.3a is currently running on the server with a working smb.conf
file. I've noted a lot of comments/suggestions to upgrade to Samba 2.2.7.
I find 2 files on the samba.org site for Red Hat 7.x: samb
getting things secured
a little better - but at least it's working now.
