Hi,
I'm having problems with seeing the hostname of a Linux box
correctly under Samba with smbstatus.
Background:
I'm running Debian sarge with Samba 3.0.5 on a server that I built. It
sits on our local network behind a Smoothwall firewall, which functions
as a virtual nameserver using our ISP's
way...
using sparc solaris 8, samba 3.0.4. All other aspects of winbind and
samba are working flawlessly.
Please include me in the reply, I'm not subscribed to this list.

I am unable to 'Apply' new drivers to any printers shared on my Samba 2.2.7a
machine from a Windows XP machine. I log in as root, the drivers upload to
print$ without a hitch. But when I click 'Apply' or 'OK' to close the
printer properties dialog box, I get 'Cannot set printer properties. Access
Thanks! I found that DIAGNOSIS.txt is also delivered with the binaries,
I found it in /usr/share/doc/samba-2.2.7a/docs/textdocs.
I would walk through DIAGNOSIS.txt, which comes with the samba
sources.

tcp is a transport protocol. It isn't a daemon. You have not
understood the

Post the output of netstat -anp | grep 139.
Is xinetd or inetd or smbd listening to this port?
I tried netstat -anp | grep 139 and I see that it is indeed xinetd which
is listening on that port. How do I

Yeah -- it works !
At least it was a driver problem!
I tested a few other drivers -- originally I took the ones from the HP homepage .. now
I took
the maybe older drivers from the original CDROM and they work well !!
So now .. I'm happy *g*

use software RAID.
If you use hardware RAID they won't even be in the same ballpark.
I'd also seriously look at updating all workstations to a common OS
platform. It will make your life of administration a lot more peaceful.
I second this as well.

Once you pointed out what we're doing differently, I have to agree.
You mileage may vary! ;)
Indeed!

Phil,
One of the things that really spooked me while doing my benchmark tests is
the impact made by the file system type. I forgot to make mention of that
in my reply.
Ext2fs is by far the fastest file system on Linux. Ext3fs is the slowest,
ReiserFS is in between them
to understand what was going wrong
in the first place.
