Nathan, get pid of the smbd process and enter the following command:
"smbcontrol debug 10"
You can also check the current loglevel by doing a:
"smbcontrol debuglevel" or a
"smbcontrol smbd debuglevel" # to list debuglevel for all smbd's

the culprit for the Excel problem? For instance, is the user able to get
anything done on his/her Excel spreadsheet before this problem
