I was able successfully to run the "smbldap-populate" script and verified

Sorry, it was a path problem with my script. I had /usr/sbin/gpasswd and
no symlink to the actual script at /usr/bin/gpasswd.

I had actually just tried "gpasswd -a '%u' '%g'" and "gpasswd -d '%u'
'%g'" but now I can't add or remove users. I get
NT_STATUS_MEMBER_NOT_IN_GROUP when I try adding users and
NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED when I try deleting users. I can post debug info
for current scripts if necessary.
