Could you be running into the file limit descriptor limit? Try checking out your file system descriptor limits. Do a cat /proc/sys/fs/file-nr. You should get three numbers aaa bbb ccc where aaa is the system reserved bbb is the current number of file descriptors ccc is the file descriptor limit.
