In your smb.conf make sure that "security = ADS"
I used the "net ads join -Uwinadmin%'passwd' to join the domain

Thnx for the reply. My problem was that my server was not properly
configured with dns. I had to correct my server's entry in dns and the
local hosts file and it worked like charm.
