I think I'm running samba 3 because I installed it with Fedora 3 setup.
Smbstatus gives me the following:
Sessionid.tdb not initialized
/var/cach/samba/connection.tdb not initialized
...
...
Failed to open byt

read only = Yes
guest ok = Yes

What exactly are you trying to determine?
ps -wuax | grep -E "smb|n

- will show you if/what the processes are running
what does smbstatus show?
- this will show the status of all things samba
