Thanks. I tried it on another laptop and it worked like a charm.
Now to figure out what is wrong with the USB subsystem on my laptop.

Your messages misses all the information we need to diagnose your
problem (platform, scanner in use, ...).
So you should have included that you run Mac OS X 10.3
