I've seen this in 0.97 and 0.98. There's the option of scanning in 12-bit mode instead of 8-bit, but it doesn't seem to work. In my understanding of how it should work, if your scanner has 12/36 bit color instead of 8/24 bit you should be able to use some of that added dynamic range when scanning
