I downloaded an compiled the last sources of sane-backends from this URL :
git://git.debian.org/sane/sane-backends.git.
Like mp150-0.13.1.tar.bz2 package, it works well on Pixma MP390 with these
resolutions : 75, 150, 300, 600, 1200 DPI, both in color and grey.
Thanks a lot for your work.
And after googling a bit, this wireshark trace demonstrates the use of
another Canon network proprietary protocol named CPCA, usually for
Canon iR business products. Unfortunately nothing common with bjnp or
pixma protocols ...

I guess that means there's no support for it in SANE,
Ok, so now I understand your issue, it appears when using gimp with the
xsane acquisition menu, looks like something is wrong here as it does
not care for the page number (I did reproduce that too) and scans only
one page.
So probably something to be notified to the gimp team.
