I just tried my Canon 4400F with xsane.
As a user it claims that there is no device but starting xsane as root
makes the scanner to react " small impulse " but xsane does not start.

On a USB connection the scanner usual timeouts the 1st usb command after
a previous scan. I fixed this by resending the failed command. This
