The subject device is not listed in the SANE backend directory. It is a
5Mp photo scanner with a USB interface. I suspect it would work quite
well if I lie to SANE about what it is, if I can identify a similar
supported device. Any suggestions? (USB id 0feb:2015)

According to the directions on Lexmark's web site, that file is intended
to be sent to the X83 only once, not every time one runs the scanner or
the printer. It does not appear to be the right sort of file for us.

the firmware file name for the X7? scanner in the source code.
There is no file on the X83 CDs with a name anywhere similar. And grepping
through all the files on the CD did not find any useful instances of "OSL".
I still hope someone will be able to send me the proper file.

It is our desire to contribute this backend to the SANE project once it
