The scanner is fully supported with Sane. It is also correctly identified:
The GT-9300 is the internal name of the device. The name "Perfection 2400"
is not stored anywhere in the firmware, it's just printed on the outside.
The Sane backend only sees the internal name, and this is what it reports.
You basically disabled the error checks for a negative number of
scan lines and the case where more scan lines as the scanner can support
are requested. This is not acceptable - the checks are there for
a reason. You are certainly free to use a modified backend with
your scanner, but I will not app

This link was just posted to the LCMS mailing list:

It compares different profiler that can create ICC profiles for scanners.
LCMS looks pretty good.

You may have to add the vendor and product IDs after the "usb" keyword
for older Sane versions, but 1.0.11 should have the information for
the 2400.

Why did the original message refer to "(firewire)"? Does scanning via
the IEEE-1394 interface screw up your USB devices? This should not happen,
and if it does, it's definitely not Sane's fault. If you have the scanner
connected on both the USB and the FireWire bus, remove one connection.

No, I don't mean the "cable", I mean an actual interface card that goes
into your computer.
This usually is a sign for communication problems with the scanner.
Are you using the parallel port adapter that came with the scanner?
You can create a log file to see if the scanner is communicating at all
by executing the following commands:
export SANE_DEBUG_EPSON=128
/usr/local/bin/scanimage
Are you trying this as root user? All parallel port scanners need root
access (that is, the backends need root access to talk to the scanners).
Please try to scan as root user.

As Henning has already pointed out, you first have to make sure that
the scanner is found by the USB scanner driver. I am working on
a procedure description to get EPSON USB scanners to work. It's not
done yet, but maybe it can provide some important pointers:

When you retrieve the latest version from CVS you don't need to apply the

If you still want to use the diff file, go into t
You have to add an entry for the 1660 in the hotplug configuration file.
Edit the file /etc/hotplug/usb.distmap and copy the line for the EPSON
Perfection 1650 (you have to go by vendor and product ID). Edit this
new line and change the product ID. Save the file.
The EPSON Perfection 2450 has a TPU for transparencies up to 4x9",
the EPSON Expression 1680 has a TPU that covers the complete scan
area (letter/A4). Both are supported, but don't have any bulk
features.

You don't have a USB scanner driver like on a Linux machine,
that's the reason why there is no device file in the /dev

why using something like libusb makes sense: It hides the

I don't have control over the lamp, this is all handled by the
scanner internally. I think I'm doing a reset again when the
backend shuts down again, it's possible that this turns the
lamp off as a side effect. The lamp should go off automatically
after a certain time.

The scanner gets initialized when the frontend starts, this happens once
per session with xscanimage or xsane, and it also happens once per
session with all the command line frontends. The session however is a lot
shorter with these programs: until they exit again. You need a frontend
that opens th

I got your other message about the kernel versions you've tried.
I don't have any experience with the 2.5 kernels, I do however

That's the internal name for this scanner. The scanner firmware only
contains one name, even though EPSON sells this scanner under different
names in different regions.

The last steps (modprobe scanner) is no longer necessary once you have
the entry for the scanner in usb.distmap. From there on, the module
will be automatically loaded when the scanner is switched on.

Here are a few things you can test:
Does this work with any of the graphical frontends (e.g. xscanimage or
xsane)?
Does it work without the batch related commands and just one sheet of paper?
Does it work without the --eject or --auto-eject commands?

I don't know if this fixes your problem, but you should put the
argument to the --source option in quotes:
--source "Automatic Document Feeder"
This is necessary for all options that have spaces in them.

This is a limitation all parallel port scanners have when used with Sane.
You already know the reason for this: Sane uses the IO ports and not
the device file to talk to the scanner.
As long as you trust everybody who's using your computer, you can just
make the frontend(s) you are using setuid ro

I am not familiar with "Linux Libranet v2.7", but I would assume it's

If it has hotplug support, make sure that the scanner is listed in
the hotplug configuration files (usb.distmap).
Make sure that the scanner device file (very likely /dev/

Which version of Sane did you use? My message (that you link to) says
that it's supported in the CVS version. It's _NOT_ supported in any

Once you are running the correct version of Sane, you can treat the

Ooops, I must have missed the original mail.
Henning listed the most likely problem, but it's also possible that
the premissions on the device file (/dev/usb/scanner0) are not set
for read and write access. You can find out if this is the case by
either looking at the output of ls -l /dev/usb/scan
