Henning listed the most likely problem, but it's also possible that
the premissions on the device file (/dev/usb/scanner0) are not set
for read and write access. You can find out if this is the case by
either looking at the output of ls -l /dev/usb/scan

To install the scanner I follwed the USB guide by Brad Hards:
